Introduction To Homeowners Insurance

Samantha Reynolds

If you are planning on buying or renting a home in the future, then you might have heard of homeowners insurance. Before you commit to a home, it's a good idea to research your options and figure out what kind of policy would be best for you. Here are some overviews of the most popular types of homeowners insurance:

Basic and Special

If you plan on owning your home, then these are two of the most popular general insurance policies. They both apply to the home and the contents of the home, which means that you are essentially completely protected when it comes to recouping your losses in the event of a disaster. The only element that is not covered is your medical bills, but health insurance can sufficiently cover that category.

  • Basic – This type of insurance covers a wide variety of dangers, including fire, smoke, lightning, hail, and windstorms. Additionally, if someone hits your home with a car, steals from your home, vandalizes your home, or if your home is somehow caught up in a riot, you will be covered.

  • Special – Special plans cover the same categories as basic insurance, but also add in a wide variety of other dangers, including general snow damage, HVAC malfunctioning, catastrophic plumbing failures, and general damages caused by appliances.

What isn't covered?

When reading those categories, you might think that just about every concern is covered. That is true in some areas, but if you live in an area that might flood or have an earthquake, then you will need to buy a separate insurance policy, just for those threats.

Nuclear incidents and war also tend to be excluded, but you probably have bigger concerns on your plate if either of those manage to damage your home.

How can you lower costs?

One of the easiest ways to get better prices on insurance is to add safety features to your home in order to secure discounts. In other words, you want to make your home safe in a way that will make your insurance provider confident in the safety of your home.

This often includes installing a comprehensive fire and smoke detection system, including a detector for carbon monoxide. A security system can also be quite valuable when it comes to protecting yourself against home invasions and burglaries. You should remember that these measures will not only lower the amount that you pay to your insurance, but they will also simply make your home safer and will prevent these disasters from happening in the first place. About Me
Understanding Insurance Policies

After I moved out of my parent's home, I started learning more and more about insurance policies. I was involved in a bad car accident, and I ended up working with my car insurance company as well as my medical and dental insurance companies. I paid my premiums and enjoyed coverage, but I didn't really understand how the entire insurance claim process worked. I wanted to make this blog to help other people like me to learn more about insurance coverage. Check out this blog for more details on insurance coverage, how to file a claim, and what you should expect throughout the shopping process.
