Earning Extra Cash As A Rideshare Driver: What You Need To Know About Uber Driver Insurance

Samantha Reynolds

In recent years, rideshare services have become a popular way for individuals to get from point A to point B. These services have also provided many people with the opportunity to increase their income while still enjoying the freedom that comes with being able to set their own hours. If you are thinking about driving for a rideshare service such as Uber, there are some things that you need to know about Uber driver insurance.

You Are Required To Maintain Your Own Personal Insurance

In order to be an Uber driver, you must have a valid auto insurance policy that meets the standards set forth by the laws in your state. These standards will typically require you to carry a minimal amount of liability and bodily injury coverage. Anytime that you are driving your vehicle and are offline or unavailable for rideshare pick-ups, your personal auto insurance coverage will be responsible for covering any claims that may result from an accident.

Uber Will Provide Liability Insurance In Certain Circumstances

Despite the fact that you are technically a freelancer when driving for a rideshare company, Uber does provide you with some insurance coverage. This supplemental insurance will cover any personal liability that results from an accident during the time that you are either waiting for a fare to pick up or when you are actively transporting a passenger. This coverage also applies to any injuries that you or your passenger may suffer as the result of an accident. The maximum payout allowed by this coverage will vary depending upon whether or not you have a passenger at the time an accident occurs.

You Must Provide Your Own Collision Insurance

While Uber does provide liability insurance anytime you are conducting business on their behalf, they will not provide you with comprehensive or collision coverage. This means that if your vehicle is damaged in an accident that you caused, you will be responsible for any costs associated with repairing or replacing your vehicle. If you wish to ensure that you are covered in this situation, you will need to purchase your own collision coverage as part of your personal auto insurance plan.

In some cases, standard auto insurance policies will exclude coverage for damages that occur while conducting business. Consequently, you will want to talk to an insurance company, such as Clover Insurance, regarding your need for Uber driver insurance in order to ensure your policy includes the specific coverage that you require.

Understanding Insurance Policies

After I moved out of my parent's home, I started learning more and more about insurance policies. I was involved in a bad car accident, and I ended up working with my car insurance company as well as my medical and dental insurance companies. I paid my premiums and enjoyed coverage, but I didn't really understand how the entire insurance claim process worked. I wanted to make this blog to help other people like me to learn more about insurance coverage. Check out this blog for more details on insurance coverage, how to file a claim, and what you should expect throughout the shopping process.
